The drama about the great depression The Grapes of Wrath was adapted into a movie in 1940. This movie features a family and some of their close friends from Oklahoma travel west to California to find work in the rough political/economic climate of the great depression. The two characters that stood out to me from the adaptation was Tom Joad and Ma Joad, their charters I thought were the most representative of Americans during the great depression. Tom Joad’s character shows the men’s hardships in the great depression whereas ma Joad does for the female side of things.
Tom Joad was in the penitentiary while the stock crashed happened leaving Jim Casey to explain everything that happened to him. Joad was not as upset as leaving as the elders of the family, he was more persistent to move on and find jobs to support themselves. While their way to California Tom focused on the keeping the family out of trouble not just due to his four years of parole that he is on but more for the corrupt police force at the time. Ma Joad was staying at uncle johns during the time Tom found his family, the Joads where at johns because of the owners of the sharecrops took over their land to make fields for big companies to have crops. During this whole time ma is the emotional support for the family and friends, meaning it takes less for her to get upset because she has everyone else’s emotions on top of her own. I think these two characters are the best to describe the emotional issues going on during the depression.
